HowManyBeers Privacy Policy

HowManyBeers has accounts, saved beer logs, profiles, groups and social activity, so it uses a backend. Beer photos you choose to log are stored there, because that history is the point of the app. Recognizing what is in a photo, on the other hand, is designed to happen on your iPhone.

This policy explains where that line sits.

Information collected or stored

Depending on the features you use, HowManyBeers may process or store:

• an authentication and account identifier;
• your username;
• an optional profile or avatar image;
• beer photographs you submit as beer logs;
• beer-log details, dates and timestamps;
• your beer history and statistics;
• group membership and group activity;
• achievements and related app activity;
• notification-related state, where applicable;
• reports, blocks and moderation-related records.

Your public identity in the app is meant to be pseudonymous: a username and an optional avatar. A legal name is not required.

Beer photos

A photo you deliberately submit as a beer log may be uploaded to backend storage, because it becomes part of your beer history and can appear in your social activity.

That applies to beer logs you create. The app is designed around a fresh in-app capture for each log rather than importing arbitrary images from your gallery, and it does not take your camera roll.

Beer recognition happens on your device

Recognition is designed to run locally using Apple's Vision framework. The app may read visible label text and classify the image on your iPhone, to judge whether the photo plausibly shows a beer or drink and to suggest a known packaged beer.

• HowManyBeers does not send each beer photo to a third-party LLM or AI service to identify it.
• There is no per-photo remote generative-AI analysis in the app's design.

These are two separate things. Recognition runs on your device; the beer-log photo you confirm is uploaded to the backend because you chose to save that log.

Backend

HowManyBeers uses Supabase infrastructure for:

• authentication;
• database records;
• profiles;
• beer logs;
• groups and social activity;
• reports and moderation;
• photo storage.

This is a hosted backend, not local storage on your phone. Your account and your saved beer history live there.

Privacy defaults

Profiles are private by default.

Access to private beer-photo content follows the visibility rules of the beer log, account or group it belongs to. Those rules are enforced by authorization controls in the backend — Row Level Security — rather than by hiding things in the interface. In plain terms: if you are not meant to see something, the server declines to hand it over.

Age verification

HowManyBeers is for people aged 21 and older.

During setup, your date of birth is sent to backend logic that determines whether you are eligible. The exact date of birth is not intended to be retained as part of your long-term profile. The result of that check, and a record that verification took place, may be retained.

What the app is not designed to collect

The app is not designed to require or use:

• precise location;
• your contacts or address book;
• third-party LLM analysis of your beer photos;
• cross-app or cross-site behavioral tracking for advertising;
• ad trackers.

Reports, blocking and moderation

HowManyBeers may retain the information needed to handle user reports and blocking, prevent abuse, moderate content, and protect account and security integrity.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account through the app's account-deletion functionality. Deletion removes or disassociates your normal account and profile content according to that flow.

Limited information may be retained or anonymized where it is needed for moderation, fraud and security, abuse prevention, or the integrity of the service.

Data sale

HowManyBeers does not sell your personal information.

Children

HowManyBeers is intended for adults aged 21 and older and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new last-updated date.
